About the program
During the late prehistoric Native American settlement period of the Ohio valley region, and just as first contacts between native Indians and early European explorers were being made, the cultural group widely referred to as the “Mississippian” people had established andoccupied numerous village sites in various locations, all across what is today’s state of Ohio.
While these Mississippian culture people continued their Hunter/Gatherer practices for much of their food requirements, they are recognized for their establishment of large scale farming practices , and “growing food” provided a more stable nutritional platform that was the mechanism for sustaining larger populations of people in more centralized communities.
Early archaeological investigations in Ohio brought about the regional term “Fort Ancient”, which refers to the Mississippian people that were dwelling in the state of Ohio during the approximate time period of 1,100 years ago to 500 years ago, after which, Europeans began arriving in…
